This is how I make the Buttercream frosting that I use on my cakes. This is a good recipe that has a consistent taste and is sweet without being too sweet. If you like frosting, then you will love Buttercream Dreams. For my customers that prefer a less sweet frosting, I recommend ordering your cake with a whipped icing instead.

You need:
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup salted butter
2 cups crisco
1 tbs. clear vanilla extract
8 cups powdered sugar

I start by adding the 2 cups of butter. The butter needs to softened. I sometimes leave it out for several hours or overnight. Alot of times I have to start with it cold. A good way to bring it down to room temperature quickly is to cut it into small cubes as I have done here. Then I get my other ingredients ready and whatever else I need to do while it is warming up. I don't recommend putting it in the microwave to soften

The ratio of salted butter to unsalted butter is what keeps the icing from being overpoweringly sweet. If you do not have salted butter on hand you can add salt a pinch at a time to your completed frosting to get the taste you desire.

After the butter has softened, I add 2 cups of crisco.

Followed by 1 tablespoon of clear vanilla extract. I use the clear extract so I can get a nice, white frosting.  It is okay to use a dark vanilla extract and that is what most home bakers have on hand but your frosting will be off white because of it. If you plan on coloring your frosting anyway, then it really makes no difference.

Then cream these 3 ingredients together. I used a hand-mixer before getting this little mixer and before that I used a fork and a tired arm!

I then add the powdered sugar roughly a cup at a time to the creamed ingredients scraping the sides often.

This is what my finished Buttercream Dreams looks like. If you do not need this much frosting, simply half the ingredients listed. If you make this much and do not use it all, you can store it in the refrigerator in a covered bowl for about 2 weeks.

It is now ready to frost your cake or be colored. Start decorating!
