Making Buttercream Roses

loafbasketofroses.jpg

You will need:

Buttercream frosting
A pastry or parchment bag
rose tip
rose nail
scissors
knife or small flat spatula

To make leaves you will also need a leaf tip.

Fill bag with buttercream frosting with rose tip inserted in end.

Hold bag with the thin part of the rose tip up.

Hold your rose nail in your opposite hand. I'm right handed so I hold the pastry bag in my right hand and the rose nail in my left.

buttercreamrosestut/nail.jpg

Begin by swirling some frosting on the rose nail with your rose tip. Swirl around and up, wider at the base than at the top. This is the frosting that you will build your rose petals on. How big it is determines how big your roses will be. Don't try to go too tall.

Now, still holding your pastry bag with the tip thin side up, you will make the center petal of your rose right on the top. Make a small hole by squeezing out frosting while spinning the nail. When you've come around a full rotation pull the bag down your rose pedestal.

Now add three petals wrapped around that center petal. Spin your nail as you make each petal.

Now add more petals below those but over lapping them. Aim to have the middle of each petal you are making be where the space between the petals above it are.

This is a small rose. But you can add still more petals to make it larger and fuller.

Now to take it off the nail, you will need your scissors. Simply close the scissors under your rose and lift it off the nail.

Use your knife or small spatula to push the rose off of the scissors and on to your cake (or board) pushing it from underneath and down.

Your rose is complete! Now you are ready to add leaves with your pastry bag filled with buttercream frosting with a leaf tip inserted.

If you want to add more roses, do that before putting in leaves.

Add more leaves

You can add vines and rosebuds. I use a parchment bag to make the vines.

Pipe in as many vines as you wish

Place rosebuds on the vines where you want them. Use your pastry bag with rose tip, thin side still pointed up. I usually do two petals with a third folded back over those two directly onto the cake (or board)

Add as many rosebuds as you wish

You are ready to give your buds leaves!

Buttercream roses take practice so don't get discouraged. Grab your bowl of icing and get started. You can always scrap your practice roses back into the bowl. As always, feel free to ask questions! Your questions help me improve this site!
